Many people shy away from bold, bright and vivid colour, and yet blue shades, such as Mac matte eye shadow in Zingy have been popular practically since the history of make-up began. Personally, I think that bright colours are an excellent way of expressing personality, and adding a little “wow” to outfits. This bold blue seems like an interesting place to start on the road to introducing bolder shades to your make up box! What I was Expecting: Before purchasing this eye shadow, I had never owned a single product by Mac because I’d always considered them to be expensive and completely out of my price range. However, over the past year or so I’ve read a lot of beauty bloggers absolutely raving about how amazing their products were, so when I had the opportunity to pick this up, quite cheaply, I jumped at the chance. As you can imagine from a product that is from a hyped-up brand, my expectations for this were incredibly high, which is generally never a good thing. However, as a huge fan of Urban Decay eye shadows, which I consider to be in a roughly similar price-range (although I’ve only ever purchased UD palettes, as single shadows seem so steeply priced!), I was expecting very similar things from this shadow: smooth application, beautiful vivid colour that blends well and lasts for a long-time. The Colour: In reality, the colour is just as beautiful as it looks in photography, which is something that I’m always weary of, because often images just can’t portray fantastic colours like this well. For that reason, I’d been expecting Mac matte eye shadow in Zingy to be similar in colour to Painkiller from Urban Decay’s Peacock Palette. However, when I finally got my hands on this, I was amazed at how different the shade was, but in a very good way (no one wants two shades that make good duplicates for each other, especially when they’re in roughly the same price range). Whilst UD’s Painkiller is a pale and shimmery turquoise-type blue, Mac matte eye shadow in Zingy is a richer and deeper blue, that of course has no shimmer, since it’s a matte shadow. Application: The texture of Zingy is very silky and smooth, so I had strong expectations that this would apply as nicely as the smoothness implied. As most ladies probably know, eye shadows tend to look more vibrant when used on top of an eye shadow base, and this was most definitely the case with this shadow: Left: With eye shadow primer, and Right: Without eye shadow primer. The shade on the right certainly seems lighter without the primer, and I found that I needed to apply more to even get it remotely close to the vibrancy I would expect from a colour like this. You can probably tell from the image above, that for some reason the shadow came out really quite “lumpy” in places, and I’m not really sure why. I left the primer to dry, for roughly as long as I would leave it for any other shade. I don’t think that I have ever experienced an eye shadow to clump like that before. When applying direct to the eyeball, I didn’t feel that the shadow was applying that smoothly at all. It seemed to apply in a very patchy kind of way, and I struggled quite a bit to get it to blend out, without using another colour to blend it in to. However, with a vivid colour like this, I personally feel that blending with other colours detracts from its vibrancy. What’s it like? You can see in this image how patchy the colour looks. You can also see the first lines of creasing, which I wouldn’t expect a. from a colour applied over a primer, or b. an eye shadow that is supposed to be of high quality. A shade as vivid as this, is perfect for someone with an eye shape like me, because the heaviness of my eyebrow means that very little colour shows. Therefore, a really vibrant colour like this allows me to create a look that pops, with very little effort from eye liner: I’m not really sure if it’s the best colour for my bluey/grey eyes, but it’s still a beautiful colour, after the problematic application. Recommended to: Anyone who is looking for a bright, vibrant colour. Suitable for: Brown eyes, although there’s no reason why it wouldn’t look great on all eye colours. I just think that it would look nicer with brown eyes. Recommended for: Night out looks, special occasions.
